Service Spotlight: Valentines for Cathedral Square

Despite the current challenges facing all,  Tiger student-athletes have stayed committed to living Princeton Athletics’ values, and finding ways to achieve, serve and lead in their respective communities. This Valentine’s day, our Student-Athlete Service Council (SASC) thought one local group in particular could use some extra love: seniors.

Led by co-presidents Mary Murphy ’22 (lacrosse) and Jake Mayer ’22 (golf), SASC organized the assembly and delivery of 100 Valentine’s gift bags to the residents of Cathedral Square, a home serving low-income seniors in Trenton, who have largely remained isolated amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the motivation for the initiative, Murphy ’22 said, “The pandemic has been particularly devastating for older generations – even those who manage to stay healthy continue to battle loneliness and feelings of isolation.  That’s why this Valentine’s Day it was more important than ever to let local senior citizens know that their Princeton Tiger Family was thinking of them.”

The gift bags were assembled on campus with the help of student-athletes from differnet teams. Each contained: a hand-written note from a Tiger student-athlete, books with puzzles and word games, Valentine’s Day-themed masks, and a stuffed tiger.

Due to Covid-19 protocols, gift bags were presented to the residents by Cathedral Square staff members.

“They were ecstatic – you made them feel so very special.  They were so thankful.” – Veronica Moore, Social Services Coordinator at Cathedral Square Senior Citizen’s Housing
